A Fun Day In Chicago

My sons and I spent Saturday in Chicago while my wife was at Bead Camp. We had a great time exploring and had a great dinner at an Armenian restaurant.

We try to take advantage of everything Chicago has the offer, but don’t seem to get down there often enough. The boys and I are already planning our next trip to Chicago we can’t wait to do some new things.

VSP And ASPEX-An Update

While VSP and ASPEX continue to lock horns in court, we have some good news for our VSP patients.  Nina has found a way for you to purchase any of the very popular ASPEX frames and maintain the same out of pocket expense.  You will need to purchase the frame from us (with a slightly higher VSP discount due to the amount the discount is applied to) and VSP will reimburse you the amount that would have been paid directly to us.  Your net expense should be the same or possibly even slightly lower in this case.  We regret the hoops that VSP is making our patients jump through, but at least you will still have access to this very popular line of frames until these two companies settle their legal battle.

Change In The Office

Dr. Nicholson has chosen to pursue a full time position with Pearle Optical in the Oak Creek area.  We have really enjoyed having her with us the past few years, but understand her desire to be in a full time position.  She will certainly be missed!

We wish Dr. Nicholson all the best in this new chapter in her career and will be staying in close contact with our friends the Nicholsons!

Macular Pigment Density Testing

Image via Wikipedia

Macular Degeneration is a disease that can wreak havoc on the vision and quality of life for many patients.  There have been many well designed studies performed to study this disease, its treatment, its causes and its prevention.  One of the best designed and executed studies to date was the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS for short).  This study found that patients who were at increased risk to develop MD could reduce this risk by approximately 25% by taking a nutritional supplement that contained; Vitamins A, E and C and the minerals Zinc and Copper.  These patients could not achieve the same risk reduction by diet alone.  That last sentence is critical.  It means that naturally occurring vitamins and minerals could not equal the protective value of a readily available nutritional supplement.

Other studies looking at the protective properties of nutrients/pigments such as Lutein have found that patients who have a low level of Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Meso-Zeaxanthin in their macula are roughly TWICE as likely to develop MD as patients with average or high levels of these nutrients.  Until recently, it was difficult to recommend specific supplements for these nutrients, because patients with normal and high levels of them in their macula would not benefit from them, it is only the patients with low levels who will benefit from them.

We have technology in the office which measures the level of these three critical pigments in a quick, non-invasive and easy to perform test.  This technology is called the “MacuScope”.  By evaluating patients for the density of these pigments we can detect patients who are at elevated risk for MD and make scientifically guided supplement recommendations.  The hope is to reduce my patients’ risk for MD, before the disease shows up and robs them of vision.

I feel so strongly about this testing and its value to my patients that we include the testing in our comprehensive eye examinations at no additional charge.

Great Times In Racine

Last weekend was a great time to be in Racine.   First of all, the weather couldn’t have been better.  Then there was the Raider-Threat game on Saturday night and the car show on Sunday.

My family and I were fortunate enough to enjoy the Raider vs Threat game.  What a great scene and event for Racine.  Over 4,000 people attended and the game was incredible.  There were no seats available in either set of bleachers and the entire field was ringed at least one person deep!

On Sunday, the car show at the Racine Zoo was a great success.  We decided to enjoy another day at North Beach, taking advantage of the sunny skies and relatively warmer water temperatures.  We are truly blessed to have such a great place to spend time with friends and family.

It’s Official-VSP Has Put Their Frame Company’s Interests First

As mentioned a bit ago here on my blog Vision Service Plan will no longer allow patients to receive in-network benefits for Aspex Eyewear products. While this is just one manufacturer, they are the single best provider of frames with polarized sun-clips. Their products have been very popular with our patients as they provide a great product at a very nice price point.

Unfortunately, VSP is trying to punish Aspex by not allowing their members to have access to Aspex products (and they have over 55 million members who receive vision care benefits through VSP, that’s a lot of patients to lose access to if your Aspex).

Here’s a link to the news story that makes this official. Look for more information coming to you if you are one of our patients and you have VSP as your vision benefits company.

New Eyeglass Cleaner

You never quite know what the mail will bring……

A few weeks ago, Nina received a sample of a “new and improved” type of eyeglass cleaning spray. I have quotes around new and improved, because we all know how those type of quotes don’t always pan out. Well, this was one of those rare exceptions! After using the sample for a week on dozens of pairs of glasses (and mine too), we were sold.

We’re now stocking 8oz, bottles of “Purity” eyeglass cleaner and will soon have switched over to the same cleaner in the small bottles that we provide with every new set of lenses. Stop by the office if you want to check out this great new cleaner. Its 99.9% streak free and works great on all lenses, but really stands out on Anti-Glare coated lenses.

Tour de Cure Time Again….

Tour de Cure
It’s Tour de Cure time again. For the last decade I’ve been riding in a great Diabetes fund raising ride. Well, I’m doing so again. June 19th is the date for the ride this year. I’m flying home from the American Optometric Association meeting in Orlando a day early to insure that I make the ride!

I’m hoping that my patients will once again make me write a big check out to the American Diabetes Association. I will match dollar for dollar every patient donation to the ride. Over the last few years I’ve donated over $3,000 matching my generous patients’ donations.
